What is Resilience?

Resilience is what gives people the psychological strength to cope with stress and hardship. It is the mental reservoir of strength that people are able to call on in times of need to carry them through without falling apart. Psychologists believe that resilient individuals are better able to handle such adversity and rebuild their lives after a catastrophe.

Dealing with change or loss is an inevitable part of life. At some point, everyone experiences setbacks. Some of these challenges might be minor (not getting a restaurant booking you wanted ), while others are on a much larger scale (earthquakes , terrorist attacks, death, illness and separation). How we deal with events and problems can play a significant role in the outcome of our lives and our long-term mental health.

What is Resilience important ?

People who lack resilience are more likely to feel overwhelmed or helpless, and use on unhealthy coping strategies such as avoiding , isolating themselves, and or become addicted to drugs, alcohol, spending etc ). Studies show that patients who had attempted suicide had significantly lower resilience scale scores than patients who had never attempted suicide. Resilient people also experience stress, setbacks, and difficult emotions, but they use copying strategies to add strengths and seek help from support systems to overcome challenges and work through problems. Resilience is the power to accept, adapt and to move forward, whilst still acknowledging the past.

Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome—is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy.
