Exclusion rates five times higher for black Caribbean pupils in parts of England

Exclusion rates for black Caribbean students in English schools are up to six times higher than those of their white peers in some local authorities, Guardian analysis has found, highlighting what experts have called an “incredible injustice” for schoolchildren from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Exclusive: analysis of racial disparities in education system raises concerns over ‘criminalisation of children’. Do you, or a friend/ family need support uncovering some of the barriers you are facing.

So why do Black lives matter?

BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, they are hoping to win improvements in lives.

What is the Impact of Slavery? There has been three types of lies told over the years when we discuss Slavery. Below are some facts to help us all become Anti racist.

Types of lies that can be told

  1. Full Lie

  2. Lie +Truth=Lie

  3. Omission = Lie

What are the facts :

  • Slavery started 1619: First African slaves brought to America.

  • When slave owners where free, most had to return to work on the land they were once slaves. They were release with no money, were illiterate and had no homes.

  • Slaves then had no option but to ask for a loan from their previous slave masters in order to work on the land ie for equipment/ tools to do the job.. This meant that many were still work for free in order to pay back the loan

  • England only stopped paying slave owner reparations in 2015.Tax payers Money 20 Million. (Equivalent 200 Billion )

  • Just five years ago, taxpayers were still paying off government debt borrowed to pay millions in 'compensation' to wealthy slave owners.

While some were well aware of the payments, which finally stopped in 2015, a lot of people had no idea modern Brits were paying off money the British Treasury gave to people made rich through human suffering. for more details see Afua Hirsch , download AKA Life Coaching Slavery impact time line and watch video Dr Joy Degruy Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome.

What are the facts ?

Maternal Mortality Rates and Health Care for Black Women in the U.K. Black Women in the U.K. are 5 times more likely to die during pregnancy and after childbirth compared to White Women (MBRRACE, 2019). We need more research done into why this is happening and recommendations to improve health care for Black Women as urgent action is needed to address this disparity.

The Government must commit to funding the changes necessary to eradicate these statistics and improve maternal health care outcomes for Black Women.

Between 2015-2017 the chance of death for Black Women was 38 out of 100,000 however it was 7 out of 100,000 for White Women according to the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity.

An urgent explanation and tangible action needs to be done by the Government to stop this number increasing and putting Black Women’s lives in danger.

Improve Maternal Mortality Rates and Health Care for Black Women in the U.K.

Julia Gillard and Reni Eddo - Lodge

Julia talks to British writer Reni Eddo-Lodge. Author of the award-winning book ‘Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race', Reni discusses the importance of intersectionality, how we move beyond a ‘white feminism’ which prioritises certain women’s voices above others, and why she’s calling for liberation rather than equality.

Mental Health

As mental health becomes more talked about, it’s important we also talk about Black mental health, especially in times like these when we are seeing a lot of public discussion about systemic racism.

In the UK, Black British people are more likely to be diagnosed with psychosis, to encounter inpatient mental health services and to be detained under the Mental Health Act than white people – these are things we need to talk about.
